چکیده

We perform real-time measurements of the net contact area between two blocks of like material at the onset of frictional slip. We show that the process of interface detachment, which immediately precedes the inception of frictional sliding, is governed by three different types of detachment fronts. These cracklike detachment fronts differ by both their propagation velocities and by the amount of net contact surface reduction caused by their passage. The most rapid fronts propagate at intersonic velocities but generate a negligible reduction in contact area across the interface. Sub-Rayleigh fronts are crack-like modes which propagate at velocities up to the Rayleigh wave speed, V , and give rise to an approximate 10% reduction in net contact area. The most efficient contact area reduction (~20%) is precipitated by the passage of “slow detachment fronts”. These fronts propagate at “anomalously” slow velocities, which are over an order of magnitude lower than V yet orders of magnitude higher than other characteristic velocity scales such as either slip or loading velocities. Slow fronts are generated, in conjunction with intersonic fronts, by the sudden arrest of subRayleigh fronts. No overall sliding of the interface occurs until either of the slower two fronts traverses the entire interface, and motion at the leading edge of the interface is initiated. Slip at the trailing edge of the interface accompanies the motion of both the slow and sub-Rayleigh fronts. We might expect these modes to be important in both fault nucleation and earthquake dynamics. R

Experimental and Numerical Model Studies of Frictional Instability Seismic Sources

Stick-slip frictional instability is widely regarded as a viable mechanism for crustal earthquakes, particularly because of the way that it can be incorporated into the notion of earthquakes as episodic unstable slip events along preexisting zones or planes of weakness represented by faults in the Earth. In this thesis, detailed laboratory observations of stick-slip events generated on a simula...

Visualizing stick–slip: experimental observations of processes governing the nucleation of frictional sliding

Understanding the dynamics of frictional motion is essential to fields ranging from nano-machines to the study of earthquakes. Frictional motion involves a huge range of time and length scales, coupling the elastic fields of two blocks under stress to the dynamics of the myriad interlocking microscopic contacts that form the interface at their plane of separation. In spite of the immense practi...

The structure of slip-pulses and supershear ruptures driving slip in bimaterial friction

The most general frictional motion in nature involves bimaterial interfaces, when contacting bodies possess different elastic properties. Frictional motion occurs when the contacts composing the interface separating these bodies detach via propagating rupture fronts. Coupling between slip and normal stress variations is unique to bimaterial interfaces. Here we use high speed simultaneous measur...

The Subsurface Crack Under Conditions of Slip and Stick Caused by a Surface Normal Force

A solution is given for the elastic stress field in a half plane containing a plane crack parallel to the surface and subjected to a uniform normal pressure and a concentrated normal load. Frictional slip according to Coulomb's law is permitted between the crack faces. As the load is increased, a slip zone originates and grows either from a crack tip or from an intermediate point. Various arran...

On the Frictional Contact in Crack Analysis

Abstract-Following the idea of Bowie and Freese we consider a crack in a field of pure bending. The crack is closed over part of its extent, and the two crack faces in contact are allowed to slip under frictional constraints. The solution is constructed under the assumption that the applied loading is monotonically increased. It is discovered, however, that it is possible to analyze unloading b...
